Explain the purpose of an audit

Couverture de l’UE : Huit premières fiches : une par thème et une méthode de présentation. Il reste à développer les sous-thèmes, la veille d’actualité et l’entraînement oral avec interaction.

Objectif : Distinguer préparation des comptes et examen indépendant.

Useful distinctions

Management is responsible for preparing financial information. An external audit involves an independent examination under the relevant framework. It should not be described as a guarantee that every transaction is correct or that the business cannot fail.

Audit quality depends on professional judgement, appropriate evidence and the ability to challenge explanations. An invoice may support a transaction, but additional evidence may be needed to understand delivery, timing or recoverability.

Discuss a tension

Technology can help auditors analyse large datasets. However, more data do not automatically mean better evidence. The auditor must understand the source, reliability and relevance of the information used.

Exercice

Explain in two sentences why checking an invoice may not be enough to assess whether a customer will pay.

Afficher le corrigé expliqué

An invoice supports the recorded sale but does not demonstrate that the customer can pay. The auditor may need further information about subsequent receipts, disputes and the customer’s financial position.
